GUM DISEASE
Stages of Gum Disease…
Two main stages
1. Gingivitis
Gingivitis is the early stage of gum disease and occurs when dental plaque builds up on teeth. Signs of this are redness and swelling of the gums, as well as bleeding. At this stage, the inflammation is reversible with help from your dentist and good oral hygiene.
2. Periodontitis
Periodontitis is the advanced stage of gum disease and occurs when gingivitis is not treated promptly. Over time the gum inflammation causes the bone and ligaments that support the teeth to resorb. This can result in tooth loss.

Treatment of Gum Disease…
Helping stabilise gum disease involves a combination of gum treatments and optimal at home oral hygiene care by the patient.
The dental professionals role is to help reduce and remove bacteria and calculus underneath the gum using tools that are specially made for this treatment.
It is highly likely this treatment is completed under local anaesthetic to make the process as comfortable as possible for the patient.
Severity of gum disease will affect the number of appointments needed or whether the patient will need to see a Periodontist.
Once a person is susceptible to gum disease, it cannot be cured or reversed, only maintained.
Treating gum disease is a lifetime commitment to help keep your teeth and monitor disease progression.
